First and foremost, I would like to apologize for the delay in updates on this site. And I do realize that it has been a long time since a post has been made. Been caught up with personal work commitments.

Through my research on educational websites, I believe some of you may have chance upon similar sites I have introduced since the onset of this website. So the following link may not strike as a surprise for some of you. Nonetheless, for the benefit of those who are oblivious to this site, I would like to introduce you to this site that may come in handy whenever you face challenges understanding a new concept in Biology.

The animations provided are not only visually refreshing but also informative and provides accurate illustrations. They allow students to acquire a better level of understanding, at a self-directed pace, which is a fundamental tool in learning. My apologies to all for this long long awaited entry. End 2009 has been a quite hectic period but filled with rather enriching events to end off 2009. Here are some of the latest updates for MJR Biology. I must say that we have received great news for MJR Biology 'O' Level results for '09 batch.

BIOLOGY CLASS RESULTS
= 100% PASSES & 50% DISTINCTIONS

An observable improvement compared to previously acquired results in MJR. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of you for your hard work, perseverance and determination towards successfully completing your 'O' Levels and achieving your targets for your various subjects; especially in Biology.

CONGRATS PEOPLE!

From here on, many of you will embark on your separate paths in life in your pursuit towards success. Here are just a few words from me,

Many individuals dream about achieving success, others constantly ponder on how to attain it. Genuine success only comes to those who are ready to face future challenges with pride and determination. Do not be afraid to try out something new. Go ahead get your hopes up even if things turns out differently than you have imagined. You will have tried, you will have learned, you never have to live with regrets.

Exams are around the corner once again, and students are stressed out again. It is undeniable that everyone will go through this phase where you are stressed out about your grades even before the commencement of the papers. But ever thought of it,
Are you giving yourself Good Stress or Bad Stress?

Why pressure yourself to the edge of nervous breakdown?
Why place yourself in a position which makes you vulnerable to your own fears?
Every mistake or failure that we face in life, does not make us a permanent failure for life. It only provides us with the opportunity to learn, improve and make us stronger before the next challenge.

What matters most is that we learn from these mistakes and not only aspire to improve but take the initiative to do so. Remember that learning should be a journey, and not a task that requires completion. YOU determine where you want to be 10 or 20 years from now.

Here are some tips to help you in your exam preparations,

Set bite-size targets for yourself. Do not OVERPLAN your revision schedule, in other words, plan TOO MANY targets for a day. Once you are unable to complete the set targets, you will begin to pressure yourself too much, resulting in unneccessary stress.
Achieve these targets one step at a time till you reach your desired outcome.
Manage your time between play and study. There is always time for play so as to allow your mind to relax before the next round of rigorous revision.
But in moderations, otherwise you will end up relaxing more than studying.
Sufficient rest in the day and sleep in the night. A well-rested mind, will be one that is ready to absorb and process information.
Remember to take sufficient short breaks to rest your eyes, hands and mind so that you don't end up burning out too fast and lose momentum to study
Last but not least,
Do not be Shy to ASK. Ask someone if you are unsure of a concept, topic or theory that has been taught in school. Noone can help you unless you voice out your needs for help.
Asking someone, like a friend, fellow senior or even your teacher, will help you to think of possible solutions towards a problem. Work together to obtain the answers and do not expect others to do it for you. That way, you will learn.

Thank you for reading this super long entry which has been long overdue as I have been busy with exam preparations myself.
To ALL students reading this entry, I wish you all the best for your coming exams.
Remember that you deserve the best grades made possible only by YOURSELF.
Noone can take away what you worked so hard for, so go ahead and achieve your targets.

You don't owe anyone any marks or grades. Not Teachers, exam setters, Cambridge examiners or even MOE can take away what you deserve.
Go ahead and claim what is rightfully yours, because only YOU can decide your grade.

Something that I have always reminded myself.

Of all the organ systems that function in our body, one of the most vital organ system that we take for granted sometimes is our Excretory System.
This system not only allows us to maintain a constant system but also prevents the accumulation of toxins in our blood.

A common misconception that people have is the confusion between the usage of the terms egestion and excretion. They are two different processes that refer to two different parts of the body.

Egestion:
"To discharge or evacuate a substance from the body, especially to evacuate unabsorbed residue of foods from the intestines"

The Excretory System primarily functions to set a balance in our blood's osmotic potential. This involves the formation of urine, to excreteseveral metabolic waste products are removed from the body as well.

Smoking is one of the major contributors to the development of cardiovascular and/or respiratory related diseases, known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD).
A habit that is hard to kick but

Among the organ systems that we have in our body, the Respiratory system is vital system that will determine the survivability of the body. Within this system lies the various breathing and respiratory mechanisms that allow the exchange of gases between the environment and our body.

The common understanding of how this sytem works always relate to the term, "breathing in" and "breathing out". But do you know that there is a collection of processes that occur before the air enters our lungs to provide us with the oxygen we need.

Do you know that the total surface area of the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs) is the size of a tennis court."
The lungs are the only organ in the body that can float on water

The highest recorded "sneeze speed" is 99 miles per hour!

Not too long ago, our Sec 2 and Sec 3 students attended a 2-day Forensic Science Workshop and a half-day Life Science workshop, where students were provided with an insight to Forensic Investigations in a typical Life Science laboratory. Among the activities covered include

Fingerprint analysis, DNA fingerprinting and also Identification of Blood Types.

In a brief half-day workshop, students were introduced to concepts taught in Life Sciences; learning more on the genetic code, called DNA.
Students learnt more on the structure and organization of DNA through a hands-on session and a simple experimental procedure for DNA extraction from a chosen plant sample, brocolli.

A living human cell, contains about 3 billion base pairs, subunits that actually makes up our DNA sequence. Genetic makeup of any known living thing or inhabitants on Earth controls the way our body functions.

Imagine this.....
An adult human body possesses an approximate 100,000 billion cells distributed and organized in the body as tissues, organs and various organ systems. This can vary from individual to individual, depending on size. Imagine the length of our DNA sequence when its put from end-to-end.

The continual functionality of the various body systems is greatly dependent on the effectiveness of genetic expression. What does genetic expression refers to???

A process whereby the DNA sequence is read into messenger molecules called mRNA, later to be translated into functional polypeptide sequences which serves a specific purpose within or external to the cell.

This process is vital in the production of proteins and polypeptides that serves to control the processes that occur within and outside the site of production.

Processes known as Transcription and Translation.

When faced with unfavorable conditions such as high stress levels or insufficient rest, the body becomes more susceptible to infection by disease-causing bacteria and viruses from the environment.

Here are some tips commonly practiced to improve one's immune system,

1) Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)
It is important that one maintains the minimal daily dosage (60milligrams) through supplementary pills or Vit C rich fruits and vegetables. However, like many other consumable items, they require check and balance.

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. As such, the body can only absorb so much, the resultant excess will only excreted out of the body. Consuming too much can cause diarrhea. This occurs as a result of excessive water retention in the intestines.

Among other recommendations include the following,
Echinacea
Ginseng
Chicken soup
Zinc

And many other naturally occurring nutrients made available by Mother Earth.
The bottom line is that there's no magic pill or elixir that will render you infection-free. What we can do is to have a healthy lifestyle which includes, regularly hydrate your body, exercise, a balanced diet and ample rest.

To meet the body's needs for the essential vitamins and minerals, contributing towards the body's improved immune system.

Good practice equates to an Improved Health Condition for your body.

Continue to have a healthy lifestlye, accompanied by good hygiene and practices.

Many of us have referred this virus as the swine flu virus since pigs were the origin of this virus. But since the discovery of the mixture of strains from pigs, birds and human strain, the H1N1 virus strain is a resultant of a mutation between the Avian, swine and human Influenza.

Different species of organisms develop different Influenza strains. The spread of these viruses across species provide the opportunity for mutation to occur. When it does occur, it lower the chances of detection and isolation by the immune system.

In this case, it becomes resistant to not only the organisms' immune system but also, towards our common drugs that we have made available.
In most cases, becoming a more deadly strain.
This is a vital factor that explains scientists' 'race against time' to find an effective vaccine to eradicate and keep the Influenza A H1N1 strain under control; before it becomes a wide-spread pandemic across the world.

WHO has raised the pandemic alert level to Phase 5, relating to confirmed detection of human-to-human transmission in at least two countries.

This notion was passed when a Mexican girl died of swine flu in Texas, US. - outside the suburbs of Mexico where the origin of the outbreak actually began.

The flu virus exists in different variations in different species of organisms.
Swine Influenza (swine flu) refers to a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the Type A Influenza. Normally, these viruses do not infect humans, however, human infections with swine flu do occur. This has been confirmed with the recent cases of person-to-person spread of a swine flu virus.

Flu viruses are usually spread from person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of people suffering from influenza. Other cases include spread of infection by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

In accordance to the rising outbreak of the swine flu, World Health Organization has raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 4 .

Commuters in Mexico City wear surgical masks while riding the subway on Monday

Phase 4 alert was identified through confirmation of person-to-person spread of a new influenza virus that has the capacity to cause a “community-level” outbreaks.” Thus, the recent increase in the pandemic alert phase indicates the increase chances of an impending global pandemic.

People infected with the virus have symptoms that include:

Fever.
Cough.
Sore throat.
Muscle and joint pain.
Shortness of breath.

Everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Despite the gigantuous size, some customers actually manage to finish their meal within an hour.

These are merely 2, among the numerous processes that are required to sustain a functional body system within an organism; ultimately, to ensure the survival of the organism.

The process that accounts for such a phenomenon is commonly referred to cellular division, or more specifically in this case, Mitosis.

Mitosis: A process that involves cellular division to produce genetically identical offspring cells, to ensure new cells are produced, replacing old or damaged cells, and allowing growth in size for a functional tissue.

An alternate cellular division process involves the formation of reproductive cells; a process known as Meiosis.

Do you know that April is STD Awareness Month?

1 in 4 US citizens suffer from STDs. A rising trend among young adults as more people get involved in multiple sex partners.

So what exactly are STDs?
STD or commonly known as sexually transmitted disease, is a disease contracted through several methods. Among these include,

1) Sexual intercourse with an infected individual or exposure to bodily fluids
2) Exposure to contaminated blood through blood transfusion
3) Sharing or the use unsterilized needles in drug abuse or even in tattoing and body piercing
4) Infected pregnant mother to her child during pregnancy.

The most common and deadly STD retrovirus is HIV.
"The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human immune system, destroying or impairing their function. In the early stages of infection, the person has no symptoms."

..."The most advanced stage of HIV infection is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It can take 10-15 years for an HIV-infected person to develop AIDS.."

Diabetes caused by a Virus?

Diabetes has been commonly referred to as a disease resultant of persistent high sugar levels in the blood. This can be attributed to insufficient insulin levels or the body's inability to respond to insulin made.

"In diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or the body can't respond normally to the insulin that is made (type 2 diabetes)."

This disease has been commonly explained by genetic-inheritance or the outcome of a very high carbohydrate diet practiced over the years. This understanding may actually change in the near future...

In a recent research performed in UK, pathologist Dr Alan Foulis, from Glasglow, found that there is a correlation between the onset of the disease with viral infection that infects the insulin-secreting beta-cells of the islets of Langerhans; a set of tissue in the pancreas.

In this research, signs of enteroviruses were found in pancreatic tissue among 60% of children found with type 1 diabetes, however hardly found in any children without the disease.
In addition, 40% of adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes showed signs of infection in the insulin-producing cells.

"Dr Alan Foulis believed that enteroviruses - a common family of viruses which cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea - would be present but until recently the technology was not sensitive enough to detect them."

The next stage to this research will involve identifying the enteroviruses that infects these beta-cellls.

2) World Smallest Baby
19 September 2004, US reported the birth of the world's smallest live-born baby, Rumaisa Rahman.
Born premature, 15 weeks before she was due, she weighs a meagre 244g (8.6 ounces) and had the size of a cell phone.

Her twin sister, Hiba, weighed 563g (1 pound 4 ounces) at birth, has reached 2.25kg (5 pounds) after 3 months. However, Rumaisa still weighed only about 1.18kg (2 pounds 10 ounces).
A year later, it was reported that she is about 5.9kg (13 pounds), and two-feet tall. Her doctor says she's not just surviving, she's thriving.

Recently in Jan 2009, a woman in the US, gave birth to a set of octuplets after undergoing IVF. Barely 30 weeks into her gestation, she went into labour and gave birth to 8 healthy babies, all weighing between 820g and 1.47kg. This amazing phenomenon is only 1 of 2 occurences in the US, where 8 live-born babies were delivered from a single mother. A total of 6 boys and 2 girls, healthy babies were delivered in Bellflower medical centre.

This is just the "2nd person recorded in US to have delivered to such a set of living octoplets."
BBC News,

First live-born set of octuplets delivered in the US, was in Houston, Texas, in 1998.
However, one baby died about a week later. Leaving 7 of her children, whom recently just celebrated their 10th birthday on Dec 2008.

For most of us, we may have read that Vitamin D supports bone growth and development by increasing the absorption of calcium and phosphorus ions.

Where can we get Vitamin D?

We can get our supply of Vitamin D not only from the food we eat, namely, fish oils, Vitamin D fortified milk products, eggs, etc.

But do you also know that sunlight has an impact on our Vitamin D production as well. It does not provide us with direct Vitamin D supplement, but UV rays in the sun actually trigger the natural production of Vitamin D in our skin.

US and UK researchers, performed a correlation study, between the effect of Vitamin D levels in the body and an individual's cognitive skills; namely attention span, orientation in space and time and memory. A target group of 2000 individuals, all aged 65 and above were chosen for this study.

Dangers of Cutting Back on Sleep

It is not uncommon for one to be watching tv, or to be on the computer chatting away or even gaming till the wee hours of the night.
This cuts down on the vital state of complete rest, i.e. Sleep.
A study that was done with a selected group of individuals, found a correlation between people who cut back on their sleep with the increase risks of 'artery hardening'.
A term referred to a heart-related disease commonly known as atherosclerosis.

To Sec 4E1 Biologists,

CONGRATULATIONS for successfully completing your secondary school education in MJR. You have come thus far and have earned the right to complete the O level exams.

The exam papers have been flown into Singapore, but are you prepared for it?

Remember the things I have mentioned to all of you on preparations for the O levels. It is true that the preparations depend on how much you have read, how much you have penned your concepts on paper, or even in this case, how many questions have you covered in the Twenty-Years-Series up till now.

At the end of the day, it's a matter of how psychologically prepared are you for the paper.

Don't waste your time trying to be a nervous-wreck for the paper, or being overly-stressed out coz its "THE O LEVLELs".

Imagine this, 4 years of your life has been spent to prepare yourself fully for these days. Now is the time to prove, not to the teachers, not to your parents but to yourself, that you actually can achieve grades that you have been aiming for.

Study smart, learn from past mistakes & DO NOT repeat them.

Face your future tasks as challenges rather than difficulties in your life.

Complete them rather than stare and fret about them, only later to realize that they are here to stay unless YOU do something about it.

You get to decide where you would like yourself to be in the next 5 years.

Lastly note from me would be,

Work hard people, coz you don't owe Cambridge any marks and grades,

THEY do. :)

EZ Enviro-Life Science Symposium 2008

Hey People,

My apologies for the late updates for this blog. Work has been kept me away from this site for quite some time. Anyway, here is the latest news on MJR Biology.

Recently, a team of students from Sec 3C competed in a Life Science Research-based competition, jointly organized by Dunman Secondary School and Singapore Airlines.

In a competition comprising of 30 different schools, and having over 30 competing teams.

All vying for the Top Positions in two different categories,

Life Sciences

Environmental Sciences category

For these students, time was short for the completion of the experiments, and meeting the deadline for submission of the project's scientific report.

At the end of 4 grueling weeks of experiments and data collation, report was successfully submitted before deadline.

This past weekend, results were announced during the EZ Enviro-Life Science Symposium.

Team MJR was awarded Merit Award after being chosen as one of the Top 5 Projects for Environmental Sciences category.

Kudos to Life Science Team MJR..

"It is a known fact that Success does not come Easy.

Enviro-Sciences Research Project Competition 2008

The complex, semifluid, translucent substance that constitutes the living matter of plant and animal cells and manifests the essential life functions of a cell. Composed of proteins, fats, and other molecules suspended in water, it includes the nucleus and cytoplasm.

Sec 3C Biology Research Task

Group 1: Respiration vs. Breathing. Are they the same? If not state the differences.

Group 2: What is meant by Aerobic Respiration? Describe the process.

Group 3: What is meant by Anaerobic Respiration? Describe the process.

Group 4: What is oxygen debt and how does the body respond to such an occurrence?

- Research on the answers for the following questions and present your answers in class on Thursday morning. I look forward to your answers and discussion for the various sub-topics in Respiration.

Sec 4E1 Research Task

Group 1. Cell division vs Nuclear Division. Are they the same?

Group 2. Illustrate the following terms and their relationships

- Homologous chromosomes

- Chromatin

- DNA

Group 3. What does the term haploid and diploid refers to?

As such, what does polyploidy refers to?

Find out the answers to the above questions provided in class yesterday, complete with certain named examples (wherever possible) and present your ideas in class on Thursday at 1pm.
